How to Clean and Care for Your Picture Frame (The Complete Guide)

Table of Contents

A well-made picture frame doesn’t just display a photo - it protects it. Whether it’s a handcrafted timber frame or a modern metal style, a few simple maintenance habits can help your frame stay in excellent condition for years.

This guide will walk you through the best ways to clean and care for your photo frames at home, including both timber and metal finishes, real glass, and acrylic glazing.

Why Frame Care Matters

Photo frames are more than just decor. They hold memories. By caring for the frame, you’re also protecting what’s inside. Dust, sunlight, humidity, or improper cleaning techniques can affect not just the frame’s surface, but also the photo or artwork it surrounds.

Cleaning Timber Picture Frames

Timber frames are durable and beautiful, but like any natural material, they benefit from gentle care. Here’s how to clean and preserve your wooden frame:

  • Dust regularly: Use a dry, soft cloth or feather duster to remove dust from the timber surface.
  • Avoid wet or chemical cleaners: Do not use water or spray-on cleaners, as these can damage the finish or seep into the timber grain.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight: Prolonged sun exposure can fade both the timber and the photo inside.
  • Avoid high-moisture areas: Don’t hang timber frames in bathrooms or kitchens where steam and humidity may warp the wood.
  • Don’t hang near vents or heaters: Avoid placing frames above fireplaces or near air conditioners and radiators, where heat or airflow may cause drying or warping.
  • Handle with care: Always carry the frame using both hands and avoid placing pressure on the glass front.
  • For storage: Wrap in paper or fabric, keep flat, and store in a dry location away from sharp objects.

Cleaning Metal Photo Frames

Metal frames are stylish, strong, and relatively low maintenance. But they still need occasional care to avoid scratches or tarnishing.

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth: Gently wipe to remove dust and fingerprints.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners: Never use scouring pads or harsh sprays, as these may scratch or dull the finish.
  • Dampen if needed: For stubborn marks, slightly dampen your cloth with clean water and wipe carefully.
  • Protect the finish: Keep metal frames out of direct sun and away from moisture to preserve their surface over time.
  • Store with care: Wrap in tissue paper or cloth and keep in a dry, cool space.

Cleaning the Glass Front

Most of our frames include real 2mm picture glass, which provides a crisp and clear view of your photo. Follow these steps to clean it safely:

  • Use a gentle glass cleaner: Spray onto a cloth, not directly onto the glass, to avoid moisture running down behind the frame edge.
  • Microfiber is best: Wipe in soft circular motions to remove fingerprints or smudges.
  • Watch the edges: Be careful not to touch the timber or metal surface with cleaning spray, especially on timber where staining can occur.
  • Helpful tip: For a streak-free alternative, mix equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Lightly spray the solution onto a microfiber cloth and clean gently.

Caring for Acrylic Glazing (Used in Large Frames)

Some of our larger frames include lightweight gallery-grade acrylic instead of glass. It’s clearer and safer for oversized sizes but needs special handling.

  • Dust with a microfiber cloth: Avoid paper towels or cotton cloths that may scratch the surface.
  • Use acrylic-safe cleaner: For smudges, use a dedicated plastic cleaner or very mild soap diluted in water. Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners.
  • Handle carefully: Acrylic can scratch more easily than glass. Lay it flat on a soft surface when cleaning.

General Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Handle frames with clean hands or cotton gloves
  • Hang away from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Dust lightly and often, before grime builds up
  • Use mat boards or spacers to stop photos touching the glass
  • Clean frames while still on the wall if they are large or fragile

Don’t:

  • Use spray cleaners directly on the frame
  • Use abrasive cloths or paper towels
  • Hang frames in damp environments
  • Press hard on the glazing surface when cleaning

Inspect the Backing and Corners Occasionally

Every few months, take a moment to check the back of the frame. Wipe away any dust buildup and inspect for signs of mould, discolouration, or moisture damage. If needed, remove the backing and artwork carefully, and allow everything to air dry before rehanging.

How to Store Your Frame (If Not on Display)

If you’re packing your frame away, wrap it in clean fabric, paper or bubble wrap (avoid plastic if storing long-term). Store it flat in a dry, well-ventilated space where it won’t get scratched or crushed.

Good Habits Make a Difference

Looking after your picture frame is simple - it just takes a few mindful steps. By dusting regularly, avoiding harsh cleaners, and storing your frames properly, you’ll keep them ready to display your memories for years to come.

All of our picture frames are built with longevity in mind. With the right care, they’ll look as good tomorrow as they do today.
