What are the Most Common Standard Picture Frame Sizes in Australia? 

There's a wide variety picture frames and photo frames to suit different styles artworks and images.

For photography, the most common sizes of photos are 4x6", 5x7", 8x10" and 16x20". Depending on if you want a matboard border around the photo, the frame size can become bigger because of this. 

For artworks, in Australia the most common sizes are A4, A3, and A2 frames to suit these popular paper sizes, which are also popular paper printing sizes. A1 frames can also be popular for posters.

Let's review each of these standard frame size options below: 

1. Picture Frames for 4x6" Photos

4x6inch photos measure 10.2 x 15.2cm and are the most common size of photograph. This is a default size that photos are commonly printed from kiosks and retail stores. 4x6inches is also very similar in size to A6, which is 10.5 x 14.8cm. There's always a wide variety of options for both unmatted and matted photo frames to suit this size, as well as collage frames with multi-windows. 

If you're looking for a matted frame to suit a 4x6inch photo, then the most common options would be 6x8inch or 8x10" photo frame. This is because picture frames in these sizes offer an evenly balanced matted border all around the 4x6inch photo. 

2. Picture Frames for 5x7" Photos

5x7inch photos measure 12.7 x 17.8cm and are popular because they're bigger than a 4x6inch, but still compact and small enough to look good in photo frames for smaller places such as table-top, a shelf, a desk, a bookcase or a mantlepiece.  

If you're looking for a matted frame to suit a 5x7inch photo, then these can look good in an 8x10" sized photo frame or even a bigger 10x12inch frame with an evenly matted border all around the 5x7inch photo. 

3. Picture Frames for 8x10" Photos

8x10inch photos measure 20.3 x 25.4cm and are considered to be a medium sized enlargement. This size of photo is ideal for a family portrait that you want to display has a feature piece. An 8x10inch photo is also a size which you would consider hanging on a wall, rather than a table-top photo frame. 

If you wanted to add a matboard border to an 8x10" photo, then any of the following frame sizes would be popular: 11″ x 14″, 12″ x 16″ or 16″ x 20″. 

Note that 8x10inch photos do not have a common aspect ratio, the border for the matboard may be different between horizontal and vertical, but this is considered acceptable. 

4. Picture Frames for 16x20" Photos

16x20inch photos measure 40.6 x 50.8cm and are considered to be a large sized enlargement. This size of photo would be ideal for a wedding portrait or a large family portrait. This would definitely be a feature piece to hang on a wall, but it would also look great when combined with other framed pieces on the same wall as well. 

If you wanted to add a matboard border to a large 16x20" photo, then either a 20″ x 24″ or 24″ x 36″ standard sized picture frame would be suitable. 

A 20x24inch sized picture frame with a matboard would offer an evenly balanced border all around a 16x20inch photo.  

5. A4 Picture Frames for A4 sized Art

A4 measures 21x29.7cm and is the most common size of paper. An A4 frame is probably the most versatile option in frame sizes. This is a default size that paper is printed and used in Australia and can be printed using any desktop printer. 

A4 picture frames are commonly used for certificates, awards, documents and even children's artworks. There's always a wide variety of A4 picture frame options to suit this size.

If you're looking for a matted frame to suit an A2 sized artwork or image, then the most common options in larger sized frames would be either A1 or a 50x70cm frame. An A1 frame with an A2 window matboard is a common option, but there can be a dramatic difference between horizontal and vertical borders. So, if you're looking for a frame option that would also provide a more evenly balanced border around the A2 artwork, then a smaller 50x70cm frame would suit better.
