Our acid-free, self-adhesive hinging tape is specifically designed for the archival methods of hinging photos and artworks to matboards.
Made in the UK, this professional grade of art hinging tape is made on premium acid-free paper and features a water-based, acrylic adhesive that is pH neutral and will not age or go yellow over time.
Easy to use and acid-free, this tape is designed for conservation hinging of works of art on paper, photographs, prints and posters.
This pH neutral white paper tape offers an aggressive, high initial tack which makes it durable and suitable for long term adhesion. It is also ideal for heavier and textured papers and mount board. The acrylic, water-based adhesive is also removable using some citrus-based removal fluids like Zest-it.
This tape can also be used as a protective liner for sealing the inside rebates of picture frames. This technique can help prevent the risk of any migration of acid from timber into the artwork, matboard and substrate over time.

Why should you hinge photos & artworks with acid-free tape?
Hinging is a conservation method of mounting photos and artworks in a frame, used by professional picture framers. It creates a way of supporting and displaying an artwork or photo, with minimal impact on the artwork itself.
The purpose of using conservation mounting methods like hinging, is so that it can be removable in the future, to help reserve the value of the artwork or image. Unlike the common process of gluing a print or artwork to a backing board or substrate, which is permanent and irreversible.
Hinging allows your print move naturally and not be permanently adhered to the backing board. This also allows your print to slightly expand and contract with changes in relative temperature over time, to help avoid severe cockling or buckling in the future.
An acid-free paper tape is better to use than a plastic sticky tape, as it won't permanently damage your artwork and it also will not deteriorate, become brittle or turn yellow over time. Paper based hinging tapes are also easier to remove and replace, especially by conservators.
Also, because it is made from paper, if you framed artwork or dropped or shocked, the paper tape will tear from the force, rather than your artwork or image.

Here are some simple steps below:
- Tear off at least two 2-3cm strips (tabs) of acid-free, paper adhesive tape.
- Apply your adhesive tape strips to the back of the image, as couple of centimeters from either side along the top edge of your photo, print or artwork.
- Note - you should only have 5mm (0.5cm) of tape and adhesive holding your artwork.
- The rest of the exposed adhesive tape is then applied to the back of the matboard so that your photo or print can be suspended along the top of your matboard window.
- Apply firm pressure to the tape and the window mat board by burnishing it (rubbing) so that it will adhere securely.
- You do not need tape on all sides of the print or print. You only need to adhere tabs of acid-free hinging tape to the top edge, so that your artwork or photo can just naturally hang down.
- You also should not apply acid-free tape all along the top edge, as this won't allow your print to expand and contract in different weather conditions, without rippling.
