Protect your photos, prints, and artworks from long-term damage with our White Acid-Free Photo Frame Inserts - a simple yet essential addition to any quality framing setup.

These inserts are cut to standard frame sizes and are made from conservation-grade, acid-free matboard. They act as a barrier between your artwork and the backing board, helping to prevent acid migration and the risk of discolouration, yellowing, or brittleness over time.

Many standard backing boards, including MDF, can become acidic as they age. By pairing these inserts with an acid-free mat board, you help shield your image from contact with potentially damaging materials inside the frame.

Ideal for Float Mounting

These inserts can also be used as a clean, acid-free backing mat for float-mounting items inside a frame. Ideal for shadow box frames or 3D displays, they provide a crisp background surface when mounting artwork, documents, or objects directly on top - without using a traditional window mat. This is a popular method for showcasing pressed flowers, certificates, medals, or handwritten letters with depth and dimension.

Key Features of Acid-Free Frame Inserts

  • Acid-Free & Buffered Core – Made from premium conservation-grade matboard, buffered with calcium carbonate for a higher and stable pH to help neutralise acidity over time.
  • No Window Opening – Solid, uncut board designed to sit behind your artwork inside the frame.
  • Protective Backing Layer – Creates a clean, stable surface between your print and the frame backing.
  • Preservation-Ready – Ideal for use with acid-free matboards to create a full archival framing setup.
  • Australian Made – Cut and packed in our Sydney workshop using professional equipment and high-grade materials.

Why Use an Acid-Free Insert?

Using an acid-free insert is an easy and affordable way to improve the longevity of any framed image. Pairing one with an acid-free mat board provides full protection - keeping your artwork spaced away from the glass and shielded from acidic materials behind it.

FAQs for Acid-Free Frame Inserts

A photo frame insert provides a protective barrier between your artwork and the backing board. It helps prevent acid migration, moisture damage, and indentations from rough or hard surfaces behind the artwork.

Yes. These white inserts are made from acid-free, lignin-free board, making them suitable for long-term photo and art preservation. They’re buffered to maintain pH balance and prevent yellowing or deterioration over time.

Choose an insert that matches the exact outer dimensions of your picture frame. These inserts are designed to sit flush behind the matboard or artwork within the frame. For help choosing the right size, see our Frame Size Measuring Guide.

Yes. If you're framing a full-bleed image without a matboard, the acid-free insert can still protect the print from direct contact with the frame’s MDF backing.

You can also use it as a backing mat inside a frame when you are float-mounting an item on top of it. This can be suitable for a 3D look or an object.

No. Foam boards and MDF backing boards are thicker and used for structural support. This insert is a thin, archival-grade layer designed specifically for preservation, not rigidity. For more structural options, browse our Foam Boards and MDF Backing Boards.

Yes. Many photographers, artists, and galleries use acid-free inserts to maintain the condition of their prints, particularly for sale or display. They're lightweight, clean, and archival-safe.

Yes. You can use a pencil or archival pen to sign, label, or mark editions on the surface. However, we recommend testing your writing tool on a spare corner first if archival integrity is important.

It’s strongly recommended. Even when using an acid-free matboard, this insert ensures the back of your artwork is also protected from acidic surfaces inside the frame. It completes the acid-free layering system for full archival framing.
