What are matboards?

Matboards are the inner borders used in photo frames to surround artwork or photos with a clean edge. Typically made from acid-free cardboard, each matboard has a window cut-out, often with a bevelled white core, to enhance the presentation. Available in a variety of colours, textures, and thicknesses, they’re a framing essential for both protection and style.

What is the difference between a Window Mat and a Photo Mat?

Matboards go by many names: Window Mat, Frame Mat, Mat Board, Matt Board, Picture Mat, Border Mat - these all refer to the same item. In the UK and Europe, the term “Mount Board” is more commonly used, along with variations like Window Mount, Photo Mount, and Passepartout. In photography, they’re often called Photo Mats.

In Australia and the US, a “Mount Board” typically refers to the backing board behind the artwork—like an acid-free insert or foam board backing.

What is a double matboard?

A double matboard is a two-layered mat, where each layer is bevel-cut to reveal the inside edge of the bottom mat. Typically, a 5mm reveal adds depth and visual interest, offering either a subtle tone-on-tone effect or a contrasting colour accent. Double mats are often used in gallery and professional displays.

Why are matboards important for picture frames?

Matboards are an essential element in framing a photo or artwork. They provide several important purposes, such as providing a buffer between the glass and the artwork, protecting it from dust and moisture.

Matboards can also add balance and proportion to an image by creating a visual break between the artwork and the frame, which can enhance its overall aesthetic appeal.

Another function of a frame mat is to provide support for the artwork. A matboard can act as a barrier to help prevent buckling or creasing that may occur over time due to changes in temperature or humidity. It can help keep the photo or artwork flat and smooth inside the frame.

Cardboard matting also comes in different colours which can allow you to customise your frames according to your preference. You can choose colours that complement your artwork's hues or opt for neutral shades like white or black that will make your picture stand out on its own.

When would I need a matboard?

Most professionally framed works include a rectangle window matboard. But if you're updating your frame, changing the image, or replacing a damaged mat, purchasing a new custom matboard ensures your display remains clean and professional.

Matboards are ideal for framing family photos, kids' artwork, or professional pieces. Our acid-free, high-quality boards provide stability and visual polish for any display.

Tips on framing your images with matboards

Framing your image with a matboard doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Use acid-free hinging tape to attach the image to the back of the matboard. Never tape the front.
  • For long-term use, consider archival-safe adhesives specifically made for photos and artworks.
  • Only tape along the top edge of the image - this allows natural expansion or contraction.
  • Use clean gloves to avoid smudges or fingerprints during handling.

FAQs about Matboards

Matboards are a piece of dense cardboard with a window cut-out which surrounds an artwork like a border inside a photo frame or a picture frame. A mat board is commonly white or off-white but can come in different colours. It will usually have a white core with a beveled window cut."

Matboards are an essential element in framing a photo or artwork. They provide several
important purposes, such as providing a buffer between the glass and the artwork, protecting it from dust and moisture. Matboards can also add balance and proportion to an image by creating a visual break between the artwork and
the frame, which can enhance its overall aesthetic appeal.

A double matboard (often known as a "Step Mat" or "Accent Mat") is when two pieces of mat board are used together. Both pieces are cut in a way that the window openings line up to expose the inside edge of the lower matboard layer. This creates an elegant, tiered effect, which looks like a step down, creating an element of depth.

Profile Australia only uses mat boards made from premium quality, acid-free pulp which is buffered with calcium carbonite for stability and longevity.

Our matboards also feature a crisp white bevel cut window opening and are 4-ply, 1.4mm thick.
